US Treasury targets Iran oil and shipping in sanctions drive
Treasury launched Operation Economic Outcast on 24 August, adding shipping, gold, and aviation to sectoral sanctions and naming nearly 60 entities, people, and vessels. OFAC also warned of sanctions risk for yielding to Iranian demands in the Strait of Hormuz. Tighter oil and shipping conditions — not a claim the strait is closed.
The U.S. Treasury on 24 August 2026 published press release sb0613, launching Operation Economic Outcast — a sanctions campaign against Iran and parties that still move its oil, money, and ships. Secretary Scott Bessent said the objective is to cut economic lifelines that support the regime. That is a Treasury announcement, not a battlefield report.
OFAC issued sectoral determinations covering digital assets, technology, gold, aviation, and shipping, and designated nearly 60 entities, individuals, and vessels. The same release says Iran’s tanker service illicitly ships oil, and that a shadow-fleet network across several jurisdictions moves Iranian crude. OFAC also issued guidance on the sanctions risk of yielding to Iranian demands related to shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
Treasury said third countries have a defined timeline to shut down named Iran-related activity or face secondary sanctions and a cut-off from the U.S. financial system. That raises friction for oil trades, hull cover, and Hormuz transits — tighter market and shipping conditions, not a claim that the strait is closed or that a war has a new front.
