Treasury doubles long-bond buybacks as 30-year yield stays high

24 Aug 2026, 13:52 UTC · World Stress · meter — → —

The Treasury will at least double long-end liquidity buybacks from 9 September. FRED’s latest 30-year yield print is 5.23% on 20 August. MarketWatch flagged the tape; it does not score the meter.

The U.S. Treasury said on 19 August that it is increasing, by at least double, the size of liquidity-support buybacks of longer-dated nominal coupon securities in the 10-to-20-year and 20-to-30-year sectors. The current maximum of $2 billion per operation becomes at least $4 billion per operation, effective 9 September 2026 through 4 November 2026. FRED series DGS30 — the 30-year Treasury constant-maturity yield — printed 5.23% on 20 August 2026, last updated 21 August. That is the official number this desk will cite. The next H.15 print is due 24 August. Higher long-end yields are borrowing-cost stress on the Markets lane, not a default call and not a market-wide trading halt.

World Stress opened the story on MarketWatch latest news (“The Treasury’s bond-market intervention isn’t working. So what comes next?”) and on Yahoo Finance stock-market news (Monday tape and Jackson Hole week). Those URLs are secondary link-outs only. No NYSE or Nasdaq market-wide halt notice and no Federal Reserve emergency-facility statement were used as a score input on this pass. The Markets meter still needs the FRED / Fiscal Data / Treasury receipt — not MarketWatch or Yahoo.
